Set Design

Lighting Issues:

I am still having issues with Flat lighting. In my Renders. The main issue seems to be getting light underneath Treetop Canopy. One way to solve this is to do what Megan has done and use render Layers this will let me render the undergrowth as a separate layer and then be able to edit down the light level by bringing down the highlights and choosing a darker mid-tone. This is an initial assumption as I will be looking into more aftereffects stuff in the coming week as I move into animation, rendering and compositing my shot together.  This was just a test my next step forward is to start really hammering into my animating.

AI Stand-ins :
I was Shown Ai stand-ins today and wow what a cool tool. They allow you to have an object frame that is a template for your asset so this way your assest is only being calculated at render time making your scene a lot lighter and easier to manage.
 atleasts thats my understanding.

The Story of Indian Animation

Indian animation and VFX industry is getting bigger and better

By Girish Menon

The animation and Visual Effects (VFX) industry continues to steadily gain acceptance with Indian talent poised to rub shoulders with global counterparts. According to the KPMG India-FICCI Indian Media and Entertainment Industry Report 2017, the Indian animation and VFX industry grew at 16.4 per cent in 2016 to reach a size of INR59.5 billion, driven majorly by a 31 per cent growth in VFX, with animation remaining steady at a growth rate of 9 percent.

Screen Arts Research Break Down

This Video Is a Shot that takes advantage of all the facial animation i made for my characters using blend shapes to achieve all of my expressions was cool and gave me a useful database of sliders i could move to manipulate my characters.

Here is a break down of some of Trevs Facials.

Looking back at my Research now  I Would have liked to build Full Facial Rigs For my Characters.
Looking at Chloe's facial rigs the rage of expression is a lot freer and fluid in how you are able to manipulate and animate the character. I do feel that through this research i was able to gain a good understanding of facial animation and facial expressions through my study of the FAC's System.

Larva

The Shows Premise follows Two larva who live in a gutter under a busy street, who play with objects that fall from above. The show has a very basic concept but plays out some very comedic scene. There was actually alot of good gags in the show which i ended up getting inspired by to use in my own animation.

Weight painting Will Again.

I had alot of Cleaning issues with my Will Model.
The Maya File had characters in its Human Ik. Not sure how i managed that.
along with a stupid sizing issue where i never thought to actually compare the size of my models. I found will was actually bigger than Trev.

After a bit of a clean up. I was ready to start rigging and weight painting Will.
I decided to just use a simple Human IK Rig in Will as i have remove second set of Arms From His Design. My Reasoning for this was Time Constraints and a Personal choice.
I felt the arms would Squish the Body to much and make the arm movements a pain.

For the most part his segmented body was easy enough to weight paint but  ran into some issues with the Neck That i am Struggling to fix. The Issue is Due to the Choice to use a human Ik Rig as i would need another joint in the neck for easier movement.

I have managed to find a work around for this with the Use of a Maya Plugin called Skinning Tools. Chloe gave this to me as she felt it could help me and speed up my process. The Smoothing and Averaging Tool, were a really big help as they allowed me to more accuracy spread the weight across the surrounding vertices.

Trev Final Tidy up

I wasn't Super Happy With my Trev Model especially his face after doing Kenny I know I can do this better. so I took it back to Zbrush and I'm so happy I did.

After Wellington, I got to go to the te papa museum and outside of the NZGDC I went to a few exhibits on display there. one was a look at New Zealand wildlife.

Here is what trev looks like now

So the face doesn't look like a tuatara and i tred to really get that triangular look of the tuatara head but it loos like a beak at the moment.

Here is Trevs New Face

So I added some flesh to his face. I was looking at a lot of 2D characters like bugs bunny, Tom and Jerry and a few others a lot of these characters have very chubby cheeks and a lot of soft rounded edges to there design. I added a lot of volume to the cheekbones and gave the neck an area of loose skin underneath to blend it on more to the neck. The detailing on the nose is a touch I am really proud of I know its subtle and simple but I think it adds a lot of character to the face

Wellington Trip

My Trip to Wellington NZGDC:

The trip to Wellington was an amazing Experience.

Before my Explanation of what we I did and saw.

I would Like to Thank Kathryn and Rachel For organizing this amazing opportunity for us.
I was able to meet a Hero of mine and create a very broad series of network connection that i have been following up on.

\

The NZGDC was an awesome experience i went to all of Weta games talks on Dr Gordbots
these were a great interest to me as they covered a lot of the aspect s of the gaming industry and as a new company i was able to see alot of the gripes and pains that come with game development/

The Gordbots Talks covered Programming and Vfx Work on the project. The VFX work was really cool to see how they used a partical system to  create ray gun effects.

Blogging as a Method of Inquiry.

1. Explain in what sense the writers of blogs can be considered "simultaneously human, machine and text".

Barnes Doesn't really elaborate on this point just making reference to Cyborgic.

2. How do you think blogging can be considered "an act of becoming"?

If the writer post consistently and is open to feedback they will have a consistent forum for feed back and critique this can lead to consistent change and development of the project.

3. How do you think blogs set up relationships across time and space?

Blogs as a method of inquiry are bases on answering a question and presenting your process this is information that can always be useful to others around the world and further generations wanting to learn from your process.

4. What, according to Barnes does 'blogging as inquiry' as a method challenge? Do you agree? Why/Why not?

according to Barnes blogging as an inquiry  is a form of collaborative writing. I agree  as a blog you open your self to feedback and Critique.

5. What according to Barnes are the simultaneous roles a blogger performs? Explain each of these roles.

6. How, according to Barnes is writing collaborative? What are the examples she uses to reinforce this idea?

7. Describe what Barnes means by the creation of "cyber-textual-organic relationships" through blogging.

8. In what way does Barnes relate blogging to assemblage?

9. How does blogging open up avenues for criticism and what could be the benefits associated with this?

10. What are the "considerable ramifications for public and scholarly engagement" resultant from the "clickable capability of blogs"?

11. How can a blog be thought of as a collaboration between the past, present and future?

12. What does ethical blogging consider?/

13. Barnes states "There is no singular entity responsible for the text that sits on the screen". Explain what point she is trying to make here.

14. Barnes states "writing is not just something that I do separate from my life." Explain what point she is trying to make here.

15. How do your/might your experiences inform your blogging process?

16. What role do you think personal experiences have in blogging inquiry?

17. What issue did the acknowledgement of personal experience in the context of academia raise for Barnes?

18. How did "expressivist composition techniques" help address this problem for Barnes?

19. Describe how you think blogging embraces a style of writing uncommon in academic literature.

20. Do you Think a blog could be considered an "act of academic activism"? Do you agree? Why/Why not?

21. How does Barnes propose blogging is a form of " academic activism"? Do you Agree? Why/Why not?

22. What role did writing autobiographically play in "academic activism" for Barnes?

23. How was the reaction of the Audience a transformative process to Barnes?

24. What was Barnes reminded of through the blog for The Conversation and why is this significant?

25. How, according to Barnes is blogging an iterative process?

26. What does Barnes say her blogging is a record of and why?

27. What happens, according to Barnes, when the focus is on the Reader?

28. In what way has Barnes’ blogging practices become a reading management system?

29. What according to Barnes is the difference between this paper about blogging as a method of inquiry and her blog?

Kenny Model Cont.

I have Been Working on my model of Kenny For the past few days.
I started with some feathers and then moved onto the base body model.
Getting The Base body shape was a bit of a challenge for me. as i researched into Bird Anatomy a lot of birds have a bent spine that sits on a angle of  70-80 degrees. My first attempt ignored this as i wanted the model to be more anthropomorphic.  giving him a straight spine and aiming for a more human skeleton. This looked really weird with the legs and i was struggling to build a smooth bend into the tail.
to compensate for this i built the tail and feet and lined them up with the body then  started to manipulate and alter the body to fit the curvature of the body that i required to connect the legs and tail.
This was an strange method to reach a end goal other than creating the base mesh ans just refining it. I chose to instead segment and build the model piece by piece. My reasoning for this comes from my previous two models (Trev and Will). My limited understanding of there anatomy and how they move made creating the models difficult and i wasn't able to fully achieve the design i was a aiming for.
by using this segmented method i could focus on one aspect or feature  of the animal and make sure i achieve the desired look. as well as being able to learn on a smaller more focused scale and then putting that knowledge together to build the character. like a Lego figure.

Issue: Connecting the Body to the Legs

Kenny.

I Started My Model Of Kenny The Kea. I decided to leave this model till last as I felt it need the most attention as I am attempting to create a body shape and character design I have never tried before.

For reference and help, I have borrowed my classmate Megan's book on animal anatomy. to get a better idea of the skeletal structure and features of the Kea.

Over The Holiday I was unable to do any modelling, as I was out of the country. So I used this time to research more into how I would go about modelling, texturing and animating Kenny.

For the base Model I have as my 2D animatic show I am going with a more anthropomorphism character model for Kenny as I want him to have gesturing movement in his arms.

Texturing is going to be an issue as I am not sure how I will achieve a feathered look more research will need to be done into this.

the animation is something i am looking forward to i have decided to give Kenny 3 fingers in his feathers to be able to give Kenny a wider range of movement and expression. So started to day with some basic feather designs.

Trev Exhibition 2

For exhibition 2 my goal was to show off atleast 2 of my models but i was aiming for 3.

I was unable to complete my 3rd model in time for the exhibition as i ran into issues with my Trev Model.

Trying to make a lizard like body and face that takes reference from a Tuatara was difficult to do. I decided for the exhibition i submitted Trev along side Will but i was not happy with the final model but due to time constraints i had to to push a render.

Reviewing the render now i can see a lot f the flaws with my Trev model and where i need to improve.

  • The face as much work as it was. it is very clear it is my first Zbrush modeled head and a reattempt is my best move forward.
  • The body lacks any character and the arm proportions are off
  • The Tail needs to be much bigger and fatter. and the spikes need to be more pronounced.'

I will be heading back from Germany tomorrow. my first goal is to get a base model for Kenny Underway and i will keep touching up my Trev model.

Wills Going on the Farm

I put Will on the render farm last night to get a test render done.

There were a few areas that had weird dimples that i could not see in Maya.

Test renders like this are a useful tip i got from Phil.  They give you a much more accurate idea of hat the model will look like in the final product.

I am Trying to speed through these renders as our exhibition is coming up and i don't want to get stuck with a render issue like last year. As i will be away over the semester break i am aiming to have my Will and Trev Models ready by this exhibition.

genre

Genres are broad enough to accommodate practically any film ever made,
"By isolating the various elements in a film and categorizing them in genres, it is possible to easily evaluate a film within its genre and allow for meaningful comparisons and some judgments on greatness."
All films have at least one major genre, although there are a number of films that are considered crossbreeds or hybrids with three or four overlapping genres (or sub-genre) types that identify them.
 genres related to my work.

Satire Comedy:
Satirical comedy is the form of satire in which the writer uses comic elements to expose the realities of the society or any problem. The writer uses fictional characters to represent the real people, to expose and condemn their corruption. It intends to improve the problems of society by exposing them and by giving their solutions.

The writer uses irony, humour and exaggeration to show the follies and misdoings of the leaders. A writer can point out towards an individual, a society or even the whole world. Usually, it’s a comic piece of writing through which the shortcomings of the society can be shown to the world in the hope that those who are being criticized will change their characters by overcoming their weaknesses.

Troll Hunters

Troll Hunters:
Plot:
I had come across this series on Netflix, and after watching the first season, I love it! I thought it is a really awesome show from DreamWorks.
The series is about a teenager named Jim Lake Jr., who had found an unusual amulet in the midst of a pile of rubble that was under the city bridge. In the evening, two trolls Blinky and AAARRRGGHH!!! came to Jim's house, and explain that the amulet had chosen him to be the first ever human "Trollhunter" a guardian who protects an underground world of trolls and gnomes from bad trolls. Also, the troll pair said that the rubble pile was the previous Trollhunter Kanjigar. As Jim tries to adapt to his new-found position with Blinky, AAARRRGGHH!!! and his best friend Toby's help, an evil plot is unfolding in the city of Arcadia, which would be hard to figure out who is friend or foe. That is all I know.

Review:
just finished watching Netflix Original Series of The Trollhunters series' based on Guillermo del Toro's book. The storyline is brilliant! There are plenty of twists & turns. Just when you think you know all the tricks, more pop up and surprise you. Being an animator myself, I really enjoyed the special effects. They were artistically done without overdoing it. The animation is wonderful with beautiful landscapes. The voice talent is especially stellar with Kelsey Grammar and Jonathan Hyde!

Auteur Theory

Started in the 1950s
An auteur is an artist, usually a film director, who applies a highly centralized and subjective control to many aspects of collaborative creative work; in other words, a person equivalent to an author of a novel or a play.
"The Auteur System can be contrasted to the genre system, in which films are rated on the basis of the expression of one person, usually the director, because his/her indelible style, authoring vision or 'signature' dictates the personality, look, and feel of the film. Certain directors (and actors) are known for certain types of films, for example, Woody Allen and comedy, the Arthur Freed unit with musicals, Alfred Hitchcock for suspense and thrillers, John Ford and John Wayne with westerns, or Errol Flynn for classic swashbuckler adventure films."
Cool Contrast Way to look at it.

list of Auteur:

Hayao Miyazaki:
His Work is clearly recognisable and has defined his work as a brand

Tarantino:
Tarantino writes and directs all his projects taking the lead position on all whole creative pipeline.

Glen Keane:
Glen Keane's started his career at Disney and built his reputation through Disney. In his later year, his reputation leads him to be able to take a more leader position on his projects.

Walt Disney
The Man Who defined the Disney style.  He was acting executive produce for many of Disney's early work putting input into all aspects of the film process.

VR

•Am I engaged in the story the way I am in a traditional film?

Invasion: I was very engaged into this animation  the way the rabbit moves around the enviroment helps lead you to action in a none forceful way. I felt this was compelling short that kept me entertained.

Son of Jaguar:  I was almost immediately put off by the 3D visuals of Son of Jaguar. There was a signal point of action and the VR is merely there as a selling point.

Which films do a better job of “immersing” me in the story?

Invasion was a true immersion of the viewer into the scene the animation plays around the viewer.

What techniques do the filmmakers use to engage me in the story?
The complete integration of the viewer into the scene the animation and events of the film play out around you.

Would you ever make a film in VR 360 degrees?  Why or why not?

I would never make a VR film. I feel it is more of a utility tool for learning animations more than film tool.

Will Being Put together. Starting his Head

Breaking will down into a segment at.a time has actually paid off.
I was able to pump this model out relatively quickly and I am happier with it than Trev.

Reviewing Trev.
Looking over my trev model I still have work to do but I will leave this for my holiday and just aim at getting some models out for my exhibition and 3D animatic.

Dragon Prince

Dragon Prince

Review:
The Dragon Prince is awesome. It has a highly entertaining story, clever humour, interesting characters, and tons of beautiful art. It also takes cues from some of the best elements in Avatar: the Last Airbender, and manages to make them feel fresh and uniquely it's own.
The lore and setting of The Dragon Prince have much to offer as well. Featuring a medieval setting with magic, knights, assassins, and, of course, dragons! There's so much to enjoy in The Dragon Prince.

Story:
The series is set in a fantasy world on the continent of Xadia, which is rich with magic derived from six primal elements. However, the humans - who could not utilize primal magic - discovered the use of dark magic, which is fueled by the life essence of animals and magical creatures. As a consequence, they were driven off by the dragons and elves of Xadia to the other end of the continent, where they founded the human kingdom. The Breach, the border between the two halves of the continent, was guarded by the king of dragons. After humans killed the dragon king and his egg. The elves attempt to assassinate the human king his heir, the young prince Ezran, as revenge for the egg's destruction. One among the elves, the young Rayla, along with Ezra and his older half-brother Callum, discovers that the dragon king's egg wasn't in fact destroyed, but stolen by the court mage. Together they undertake the three undertake a quest to return the egg to his mother.

Wills Segmented Modeling Process experiment

Since will is basically a suit of armour i thought why not attempt modeling him.as one.
By this i mean i will model will in segments at attach these togethere. Rjis was something i am curiose to try.

The resason for this is it breaks Will down into visible tasks making it alot easier for me to prioratize a task/part at a time. Hoping this help with project and time management.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel:
Plot:
After crashing an experimental aircraft, Carol Danvers is discovered by the Kree and trained as a member of the elite Kree Solider.
Six years later, after escaping to Earth while under attack by the Skrulls, Danvers discovers there's more to her past. With help from S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury, they set out to unravel the truth
Review:
An interesting take on the origin of a superhero. I really enjoyed the visual storytelling. The Special Effects of This Film Were amazing with the suits that the Kree where. I was really blown away by the visual and how the rotoscoping modelling and VFX were put together.
The Story I felt was lacking and really tried to play it safe with the plot. The Comics of Captain marvel portray a much more gritty hard-ass character that I feel was really feathered down to appeal to a wider female audience.

All in all, a great hero movie. I think they went a bit safe, story-wise. Ties well in with future films, and yet leaves me wanting more.

Spiderman

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse:
Plot:
Miles Morales is a New York teen struggling with school, friends and, on top of that, being the new Spider-Man. When he comes across Peter Parker, the erstwhile saviour of New York, in the multiverse, Miles must train to become the new protector of his city.
Review:
I had very high hopes for Into The Spider-Verse. After seeing it, it surpassed my expectations. The best part of the film is easily the animation. It has so much personality and style. I hope more animated films in the future use this style. There is also some deep and dark elements to the story as well. The film isn't scared to dig into some dark material instead of only trying to appeal to children, and I can commend it for that.
Another great thing about this movie is the characters. Some of the side characters like Spider-Ham don't build that much as characters but they never seemed like lazy characters. They all have their own personality and add a lot to the film. The more fleshed out characters like Miles, Peter, and Gwen are one of the biggest surprises of this film. Most superhero films don't try to flesh out their characters and mostly just try to make them cool.
This movie takes time in developing those characters to make them more likeable. Especially the process Miles went through in this film was really impactful. There are a few issues I have with this film though. For some reason, they blur out of the backgrounds for some of the shots which bothered me because since the animation was so amazing I wanted to watch the environment and take in the art. Although, it may have just been the theatre screen I watched the film on. Another thing is that the film gets a little cheesy near the end, but nowhere near annoyingly cheesy. So, I would highly recommend seeing this film. It's my favourite superhero movie of the past years and my favourite Spider-Man movie.
