Blog Task:
Summarise the history of short films
Choose one of the short films we watched in class and compare and contrast it with the full-length feature it inspired. What effect did going from short to long format have on: narrative structure, character development, world building etc?
Alive in Joburg (2005) Neill Blomkamp (Short Film)
to
District 9 (Feature Film).
Breakdown:
Narrative Structure:
The Story Structure changes dramatically from the Short film to Feature length.
The Short Story follows a more documentary style story Narrative. The Feature film pays homage and build off this idea. as the film starts as a documentary style but turns into a character story driven film as the main character becomes infected.
Character Development:
The Character development was almost nothing in the short film as it is a mocumentary type film.
In District 9 the Story follows the events and narrative of the main character as this story follows his actions/story line.
World Building:
The World building extends dramatically past what the short film was able to accomplish.
The level of depth and exploratory visual aid and narrative we are given in the feature film allows us the viewers to gain a good understanding of the Prawns past, there social structure and standing and we are able to relate and understand to there motives.

Choose one of the films in this lesson from recent winners of the New Zealand 48HOUR Film Festival. Which of these could you see being made into a feature-length film?
Why and how might that be achieved?
